Chapter Three
The next morning I got into the dining room when it was still just Satan and Asmo at the table. They were discussing something with excitement. Satan addressed me as I approached my seat.
“It’s impressive you were able to make a pact on your second day,” he praised me with the most genuine amusement I’ve seen yet.
“It’s even crazier that Levi teamed up with them to do it,” Asmo added before turning to me, “Which one of us would you want to make a pact with next?”
I looked at him, confused, “I have no intentions of making pacts. That’s not my goal. I didn’t even know they were a real thing until Levi told me.”
“Then what is your goal,” Satan’s eyes bore into me.
“To enjoy my time here and make friends.”
Asmo smiled, almost threateningly, “Well, either way. Don’t think we’re as stupid and easy to trick as Mammon.”
“Stop lookin’ down on me,” speak of the devil, here he is, “You guys think you’re so much smarter than me!”
Oh boy here he goes again. Sure they aren’t nice to him but he’s not doing himself many favors.
“This is all Lucifer’s fault anyways,” he continued ranting, “Who puts my precious Goldie in a block of ice? Is that his lame attempt at a dad joke?”
Ah, the phrase appears again. Lucifer smacked Mammon upside the head, annoyed. He then smiled at me, “Good job on making a pact so soon. Even though Mammon is the easiest to trick. It’s still a feat to make a pact so soon, and with a demon so strong.”
It was weird enough hearing him compliment me, let alone compliment Mammon so highly and back-handedly, “How strong is Mammon?”
“I must never have explained. We are in order of strength, not birth.”
“Kinda weird, but okay.”
Mammon apparently decided he had had enough because he stormed out of the room. Weirdly, he took me with him. I was going to ask why he was dragging me around but he wouldn’t shut up about how everything was my fault.
“Whatever, dude,” I dismissed, irritated, ripping my arm from his grip, “I don’t care about the opinion of someone that doesn’t even bother with my name. I bet you don’t even remember what it is.”
“Of course I do,” he lied, “I just don’t care to call you anything other than human.”
“So you wanna test the power of the pact?”
“Whatever, hu-”
“Drizzm,” I corrected, my body flowing with energy as the pact activated, “You will call me by my name. Understand? You can just not speak until you learn if you’d like.”
He tried to yell, but the harder he tried to resist my order, the more he seemed in physical pain. Before eventually, he relented, “Drizzm! Fine! Happy?”
I smiled, “Yes.”
I released him and left him to realize next time to not try me. He followed me wordlessly as I got my bag and went to school. As we walked he actually just sorta chatted with me for the first time. Unfortunately, I didn’t really relate. Mostly he talked about gambling and partying. Two activities I don’t really participate in.
He still bounced when we got to school, which was fine. I grabbed a snack since he made me skip breakfast and went to the library with my remaining time. The library was huge. Two huge floors with rows upon rows of bookcases. I walked past a few before I heard Satan call out to me.
“Hi Satan,” I greeted, “this library is huge."
“Indeed,” he nodded, “Are you looking for something?”
I shook my head.
“Then let’s get you started. I have a few books that come to mind. Follow me.”
He led me to a different section and grabbed a couple thicc tomes for me to check out. Though, the librarian seemed really hesitant to actually let me. I don’t think they would if Satan wasn’t with me and the possible threat of Diavolo exists.
Satan spoke as we left the library, “It’s not just the fact I was with you.”
“Pardon?”
“Your pact with Mammon means you’re worth noting and demons will be more likely to respect you now.”
“How did the news travel so fast?”
“Demons love their gossip. Also, Asmo posted about it.”
“I see.”
“You seem unbothered by demons treating you different.”
“I expected worse to be honest. I also never really fit in with humans either, so I guess I’m sorta used to it.”
“I see.”
The bell rang and we parted ways for class. The day passed as normal as I expect it to. During afternoon recess I was sitting with Mammon, who was chatting about some horse race. A pale demon with short straight hair, with a longer left bang that looked dipped in the most gorgeous teal approached us.
“Pardon me, but would you happen to have seen the Young Master,” he politely asked.
“Is he dodgin’ his work again,” Mammon asked, somewhat amused, “Haven’t seen him though, sorry.”
“It’s quite alright. I apologize for interrupting,” he then spoke to me, “Ah, how rude of me. I forgot to introduce myself. I’m Barbatos, Lord Diavolo’s butler. It’s a pleasure to meet you Drizzm.”
“It’s nice to meet you too, Barbatos,” I returned. Before we could continue, two more people approached. They didn’t wear the uniforms like everyone else. One of them was short like a child, pale, with short shaggy blond hair. The other was tall, dark, with short wavy dark brown hair.
“Hello, we wanted to finally introduce ourselves to the other human exchange student,” the taller one began, “We’re the angel exchange students. I’m Simeon, and this is Luke.”
Luke seemed really apprehensive and stared intently at me. I introduced myself, “My name is Drizzm. It’s nice to finally meet both of you.”
“See Luke? He seems friendly, right?”
“Yeah,” Luke hesitantly nodded.
“So quiet Luke,” teased Lucifer, who approached with Diavolo. It was a party in here, “That’s unlike you. Normally you bark a lot more. Scared of all the demons?”
Luke’s face flushed red, “I am not scared of such lowly demons. I’ll have you know I report directly to Michael!”
“Yeah, yeah Chihuahua,” Mammon chimed in, “keep yappin’.”
“I’m not a chihuahua!”
“He does indeed remind me of one,” Lucifer concurred. Diavolo agreed along with him, as cheerful as ever. Diavolo in fact seemed very amused by all the back and forth. Luke was fuming, not enjoying the teasing.
“That’s enough now,” Simeon stepped in before it got too far, “I know you like teasing Luke, but that’s enough.”
“Don’t step in Simeon, I’m fine!”
Simeon agreed, placating him. We swapped numbers right as the bell rang. The others left for class. Well, Diavolo was dragged off sadly by Barbatos. Luke stalled behind, staring at me intensely again.
“Yes, Luke,” I inquired.
“Don’t trust the demons,” he warned me seriously, “None of them are any good for you. Especially Lucifer.”
A lot of people are giving me advice that I already implement but I know they mean well, “Okay, I’ll make sure to remember that.”
He nodded, satisfied, then left for his own class when Simeon called for him. So those are the angels. Luke is more high strung than Simeon it seems. But Simeon called me ‘he’. Does he know? I kinda hope he does and it’s just the angels don’t care. I always thought it was weird that heaven would dislike queer people. Though I’m still gonna ask him at some point.
The rest of the day went by with no more interesting things happening. I finished my last class, went back, did homework, had dinner, read the books from the library. That actually caused me to stay up pretty late and I needed to go to the bathroom before I laid down for bed.
As I left my room I heard something. It sounded like someone asking for help. I didn’t recognize any of the brother’s voices and I didn’t usually hear Levi’s games. I followed the voice, going upstairs, past the rooms, to a circular staircase leading to I assume the attic.
“Can’t sleep Drizzm,” Lucifer got between me and the staircase.
“I lost track of time reading and I was headed to the bathroom,” I clarified, “but I heard someone calling out.”
“It was probably your imagination. Or Levi is playing games late again.”
“And he’s playing up the stairs?”
“No, that’s the attic and he doesn’t leave his room when gaming.”
I eyed the staircase again without meaning to.
“Don’t think about it. The attic is dangerous for humans. I’ll escort you to bed.”
It was clear that this was not up for discussion and he was trying to be polite. I know it’s not worth arguing with him so I let him escort me to the bathroom then my room. He told me to sleep well and left to continue his rounds. The mystery of the attic and what I heard filled my head until I fell asleep.
